Description
The Whitemouth Eel, Gymnothorax meleagris, also goes by the Whitemouth Moray Eel, Turkey Moray Eel, White-mouth Moray, and Guineafowl Moray. The Whitemouth Eel has a dark brown/black body with scattered dark-bordered white spots throughout. The interior of its mouth is a bright white which gives the moray its name. They are found mostly in both the Indian and Pacific Oceans spending most of their time hiding in reef rock at depths of up to 120 feet. The Whitemouth Eel is one of the more rare species of moray eels found in the wild and even less common in the aquarium trade.
Whitemouth Eel Care Facts
- Moray eels are aggressive tank dwellers and should be put in a reef system with extreme caution as they are known to prey on smaller fish and inverts.
- They must be handled with care by the aquarist as the moray eel can actually bite – handfeeding is not suggested.
- The Whitemouth Eel should have plenty of live rock in their tank – enough to fit their entire body in order to make them feel safe and secure. The tank should have a SEALED lid to prevent potential escapes.
- Morays are carnivores and will eat most prepared frozen foods including brine, mysis, clams, squid, octopus, as well as live prey.
- Morays should not be kept with small fish or inverts and two morays should only be kept in very large tanks (at least 250 gallons) but this is not recommended.
