Description

The Scooter Blenny, Synchiropus ocellatus, also known as the Scooter Dragonet or Ocellated Dragonet. This is a small fish with a large head with top mounted eyes and a small pointed mouth. It has a starry pattern of black and white splotches scattered across its body with bright blue spots on its head. Their moniker of “Scooter” comes from the way they they seem to scoot across the bottom of the tank. Scooter Blennies are mainstays in many home aquariums as they are very easy to keep. The Scooter Blenny, indigenous to the Pacific Ocean, can be kept either singly or in groups but usually with only one male to many females. They can reach up to 5 inches in length and require a tank no less than 30 gallons if kept individually, and no less than 70 in kept in a group. They are a peaceful species, and only require a fair amount of live rock work to create caves and hiding places and an established enough tank for there to be enough microfauna scattered in the substrate for it to eat.  The Scooter Blenny will sift through the sand for food. They will also take prepared fish foods, such as finely cut meaty foods and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp may be acceptable substitutes. This fish is really ideal for the more hands-off aquarist as it requires little day to day attention. On the other hand, expert aquarists recognize the usefulness and energy of the Scooter Blenny and often keep one or two in their tanks as well. They will thrive in a temperature range of 72-78° F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
