Porphyridium creuntum has a bright pink/red hue. Known for its fatty acids, lipids and polysaccharides for color enhancing properties. Has a high concentration of phycoerythrin, zeaxanthin (carotenoids), phycoerythrin (accessory pigment to the main chlorophyll, color enhancing cells), ALA fats (Alpha-linolenic acid), EPA fats (Eicosapentaenoic acid). Unique properties of this phytoplankton is the polysaccharides are sulphated. Porphyridium is commonly used in the aquaculture community to bring red colors into other filter feeders, like marine rotifers & copepods. Porphyridium also has a high concentration of antioxidants.
