Quarantined fish

Observed, treated, eating. Then yours.

Every fish goes through our quarantine before it is offered. Watch it progress here, and pick it up when it clears.

The process

What quarantine means here

1

Dipped on arrival

Every fish gets a methylene blue and formalin bath the day it lands, then goes into its own quarantine system, away from everything else.

2

21 days of transfers and treatment

Our hybrid tank transfer method: the fish moves to a clean, dry tank five times in the first 16 days, with a preventative medication course, peroxide baths and medicated food every day.

3

Observed and eating

The last stretch is observation only. A fish clears when it has finished the 21 days, shows no signs of disease and is eating prepared foods readily.

4

Early access, then open

Service clients can claim a cleared fish for seven days. After that it opens to everyone for local pickup by appointment.

Day by day

The 21-day plan every fish follows

The same steps, in the same order, for every batch. Each one is logged as it happens.

  1. Day 1 Arrival bath, into tank one, first medication dose, medicated food begins.
  2. Day 4 Peroxide bath, then a move to a clean tank.
  3. Day 7 Move to a clean tank, second medication dose.
  4. Day 10 Peroxide bath, then a move to a clean tank.
  5. Day 13 Move to a clean tank.
  6. Day 16 Final move. Observation begins.
  7. Days 16 to 21 Watched and fed. Clears on day 21 if it is healthy and eating well.

Each tank a fish leaves is cleaned and left bone dry for at least 36 hours before it is used again, so parasites cannot follow the fish forward. Medicated food continues until the fish goes home with you.

Fish in quarantine

Updated as each fish progresses. While a fish is in quarantine, its product page shows the quarantine record so far: arrival, each transfer, each dip and dose, with dates. "Early access" means service clients can claim it now; "Available" means anyone can.

QT fish questions

Do you ship fish?

Not right now. Fish are local pickup only, by appointment.

How do I get early access?

Service clients get it automatically. If we maintain your tank, sign in and the fish shows as claimable during its early-access week.

Can I reserve a fish still in QT?

Not yet. Fish are offered once they clear, so what you see is a fish that is ready.

What is in the quarantine record?

The arrival date, every tank transfer, every bath and medication dose with the date it was given, and the day it cleared. It shows on the product page while the fish is in quarantine; once released, the listing simply says fully quarantined.

Why tank transfers instead of copper?

Moving the fish to a clean, dry tank every few days leaves the free-swimming stage of ich and velvet behind, without the stress of a long copper course. The medication, peroxide baths and medicated food cover flukes, bacteria and internal parasites.

Do I still need to quarantine at home?

We recommend it for any new fish, but ours arrive having already been through observation and treatment, so a short settle-in period is usually enough. The quarantine record on each listing shows exactly what was done.
