Tank Water Volume Calculator
Pick your tank shape, enter the inside dimensions and see how much water it really holds.
How this works
We work out the floor area of the shape, multiply by the water depth (height minus the gap below the rim), and convert cubic inches to US gallons at 231 in³ = 1 gal. Bowfronts use a curved-front estimate, so measure the bow at its deepest point.
Measure inside the glass if you can. Outside measurements on thick glass can add a few gallons that are not really there.
Questions
Why does my tank hold less than the size on the box?
A “75 gallon” tank is named by its outside size. Glass thickness, the gap below the rim, rock and sand all take space, so most reefs hold 15 to 25 percent less water than the label.
Should I dose for the display or the whole system?
The whole system. Add the sump and refugium in the Total System Volume calculator and use that number for salt, supplements and medication.
Rather have us dial it in?
Frags2Fishes service techs test, dose and maintain reef tanks across PA, MD, DE, NJ and VA, and beyond.
