How much heater you need for your room temperature, split across two heaters so one failure is not a disaster.
How this works
We use about 0.4 W per gallon for each °F you need to raise the water above the room. A sump with lids, or a warm room, needs less. Two smaller heaters each sized at about 60 percent keep the tank safe if one fails either way.

Is it OK to oversize a heater?
Only with a controller. Oversized heaters cook a tank fast if the thermostat sticks.
Where should the heater go?
In the sump, in steady flow, fully under water at the lowest water level.
