Return Pump & Flow Calculator
How much a return pump has to push after height and plumbing, and how much flow your display needs.
How this works
Total head = lift + about 1 ft per 10 ft of pipe + about 0.5 ft per elbow. Return flow of 3 to 8 times the display per hour keeps the sump working without overwhelming the overflow. Powerheads do the real water movement: roughly 20× for soft corals up to 50× or more for SPS.

Can my overflow handle it?
Check the overflow rating. A pump past it will flood the sump or the room in a power-back. Size the pump to the overflow first.
Is a DC pump worth it?
Usually. You can tune the flow, run it quieter, and use feed mode.
