How this works

Aragonite reef sand settles at roughly 1 lb per 20 in³, so pounds = length × width × depth ÷ 20. Crushed coral is a little lighter, fine “sugar” sand a little heavier.

Questions

How deep should my sand bed be?

One to two inches for most reefs. Deep sand beds (4 in +) are a different method and need fine sand and patience.

Live sand or dry sand?

Either works. Dry sand is cleaner to start with; rinse it until the water runs mostly clear.
