The Tiger Jawfish, Opistognathus sp, also known as the Bali Tiger Jawfish, Goldspecs Jawfish, Black Cap Jawfish, and Black Head Jawfish, is a burrowing jawfish with vibrant and intricate patterning resembling the stripes of a tiger. The Tiger Jawfish is a meticulous and hurried burrower. They can often be caught adding new additions to their houses, redesigning the interior decoration, or landscaping the front yard. Watching the Tiger Jawfish build and rebuild their burrows provides a novel observable activity for many hobbyist’s tanks. Jawfish are even known to spit pieces of rock or gravel that get too close to their humble abodes. Jawfish can be skittish and jump. It is highly recommended that a closed lid is kept on any tank housing a Tiger Jawfish and also to keep only one Tiger Jawfish per tank, unless introduced as a confirmed pair. They should also be kept in tanks with sandy bottoms and movable pieces of gravel for the Tiger Jawfish to construct its burrow. They eat mainly meaty foods, live or frozen, and can be augmented with an herbivore diet as well. The Tiger Jawfish is a fun, unique addition to any tank community.
