The Six Line Wrasse, Pseudocheillinus hexataenia, certainly makes a tremendous addition to your home aquarium or fish tanks. The Six Line Wrasse has a blue body with six orange horizontal stripes racing from head to tail with a petite “false eye” at the base along with green tail fins. This false eye is structured to confuse predators and gives this intelligent fish a nice chance to escape. The Six Line Wrasse is mesmerizing which makes your aquarium captivating and beautiful to watch. It is a very active fish and loves to wander in the tank with curiosity. The Six Line Wrasse loves to spend most of its time swimming and darting in and out the rocky caves. Its active swimming style makes it as popular as its vibrant colored body. They are diurnal, which means they are active by day and sleep at night. As with all fish in this genus they sleep in a mucus cocoon, which fortunately does not seem degrade the water quality. It is thought that the cocoon protects them from predators as they sleep by masking their scent. They can grow to be 4″ and require a tank no less than 30 gallons. Though the Six Line Wrasse is reef safe, It is best kept with larger, more aggressive fish such as Tangs, Angelfish, Butterflyfish, Goatfish, Puffers and Squirrelfish. Like the other lined Wrasses it will become more aggressive as it grows so it should not be kept with smaller Ornamental Shrimp, shy or docile fish as well as with other Wrasses. They do not co-habitat well with other Wrasses, and as adults they may even eat smaller Ornamental Shrimp and smaller fish. They are great at getting rid of pests like Bristle Worms, parasitic pyramidellid Snails and Flatworms. They have also been known at times to clean ectoparasites, parasitic isopods and copepods from other fish. The Six Line Wrasse is very easy to maintain and does not need any kind of extra treatments or care, and once acclimated they are extremely hardy. The Six Line Wrasse has powerful jaws that enable them to crush their food, which includes worms, and smaller Shrimp. They are carnivorous and should fed a diet consisting of rich protein foods, formulas and flakes foods, with an emphasis on small crustaceans, Mysis and Brine Shrimp. They are very active and need to be fed 2-3 times daily. They will also graze between meals on the micro fauna provided by the live rock. The Six Line Wrasse will thrive at a temperature range of 74-79°F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
