The Derasa or smooth giant clam is the hardiest of the giant clam species. In the wild they can grow to about 2 feet! These clams exhibit a white, smooth, wavy shell complete with a colorful mantle. Derasa clams can have varying patterns of striations or snakeskin while also showing off a blue rim with tan, green, and brown shading. Derasa clams prefer to be placed in the sand at the bottom of the aquarium because they do not have some of the stronger byssal threads other members of this family utilize. These clams require medium level lighting and medium level flow to keep them happy and healthy. You can provide these clams a healthy snack of microalgae or copepods to keep them vibrant.
