The Black Trigger, Melichthys niger, also known as the Black Triggerfish, Hawaiian Black Triggerfish, Indian Trigger, and Black-Finned Triggerfish, features a dark brown/black body with faded white horizontal lines across its body. Growing up to a maximum of ten inches it will need at least a tank of 100 gallons with many hiding places. The Black Trigger is relatively easy to care for, is an active tank swimmer, and is best kept in tanks with more aggressive fish (not members of its own species). It is not considered reef safe as they can nip on small inverts anc corals. Its omnivorous diet consists of both meaty frozen and live preparations and algal based herbivorous foods. They can be trained to hand-feed at the top of the aquarium like other triggers. Overall, this bold-colored fish is actually quite easy to care for and makes a great fish when paired with the proper tankmates.
