The Pilotfish, Gnathanodon speciosus, also known as the Golden Jack, or Gold Trevally, is a large fish that is difficult to raise in a home aquaruim. As a mature adult, the Pilotfish can grow up to 4 feet and should be housed in a tank no less than 300 gallons. Because the Pilotfish is a schooling fish, they thrive best in groups, which only requires larger tank sizes to accommodate more than one individual. The Pilotfish is carnivorous eating fleshy frozen foods or live foods. Again, it cannot be stressed enough, this fish will grow very big and very fast and must have enough room to swim freely in a tank. If these preconditions can be met, the Pilotfish is an incredibly beautiful and interesting fish to watch. In the wild they often cling to larger marine species like sharks in a symbiotic relationship, similar to that of a remora.
