Zebra Eel

Description

The Zebra Eel, Gymnomuraena zebra, is appropriately named due to its striking black and white striping pattern. It should be kept singly in a large tank with plenty of live rock, a sandy substrate, and a tightly sealed lid. As a natural voracious carnivore, the Zebra Eel will consume most small inverts and fish so it is not a reef safe species. Care should be had when feeding as the Zebra Eel’s poor eyesight can easily mistake a hand for food – feeding tongs are recommended. Their mouths are full of bacteria that can be harmful if bitten. Generally, the Zebra Eel takes a few days to acclimatize to its habitat so don’t worry if it seems off the first few days. We suggest that this eel should only be cared for by an experienced aquarist who is familiar with the necessary precautions of owning a large marine eel.
