Description

The Dusky Dottyback, Pseudochromis fuscus, has a body color ranging from bright yellow to a muddled purple/brown. Generally, the entire dottyback is the same color. The Dusky Dottyback can grow up to 4 inches and should be housed in a tank of at least 30 gallons if kept individually, and 70 gallons or more if keeping multiple Dottybacks. The tank should also have plenty of live rock to provide caves for hiding places.

It is not afraid to defend its territory it has claimed, even against larger fish. This fish is a great choice for the beginner aquarium for its hardiness and should be housed with fish that will not be bullied easily – if multiple Dusky Dottybacks are desired, they must be introduced at the same time, and even this can not guarantee territorial aggression will not occur. There is some success with introducing several dottybacks at the same time, this allows each to establish a territory to defend, without giving an advantage to one.

Though they may not get along with other Dottybacks, they are best kept with Tangs, large Damselfish, Hawkfish, Angelfish, Parrotfish and other large fish that can hold their own in the tank. The Dusky Dottyback feeds on meaty foods, prepared or frozen, and will occasionally nip on small ornamental shrimp. Due to a jumping habit, the Dusky Dottyback should be kept in a tank with a tightly sealed lid. They will thrive in a temperature range of 72-78
