The Midas Blenny, Ecsenius midas, makes a beautiful addition to any reef tank. The aquarium must have proper caves and hiding places, and the presence of live rocks and sandy substrates are indispensable in your fish tank. The Midas Blenny mostly inhabits rocky areas with plenty of crevices and corals around, so it should be housed in a tank with plenty of live rock. Midas Blenny can grow to be 5 inches, and should be kept in a tank no less than 30 gallons if keeping one, and no less than 70 gallons for two. It is a peaceful aquarium fish, and it hardly bothers any tank mates. It is best to house in a pair together and should never be kept with aggressive fish or large predators. The Midas Blenny is basically a herbivore, and mainly feeds on zooplankton algae by scraping from the hard surface. It loves to sift through the sand in search of food and with its pointed mouth it can easily catch the micro fauna. It is a hardy species which requires little care, and can tolerate a wide range of water conditions, all these and more makes it a very good choice for a novice aquarist. The Midas Blenny breeds by laying adhesive eggs on the substrate. Its odd undulating swimming motion makes this fish seem comical and endearing. The Midas Blenny is also known to hide with its head exposed checking out the rest of the tank. It is considered a good jumper, so we advise you to keep it in a closed tank. The Midas Blenny thrives well in a temperature range of 73-82°F, and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
