The Lantern Basslet, Serranus baldwini, commonly referred to as the Lanterns Bass, Baldwin’s serranid, Baldwin’s dwarf Basslet. The Lantern Basslet has beautiful body markings, mottled with orange, black and brown markings, and is elongated in form, the Lantern Basslet makes a beautiful addition to a reef tank. This Basslet is great for beginners, as it is hardy, and very disease resistant, and should not be kept in an aquarium with small shrimp or fish. The Lantern Basslet grows up to 4-5 inches, and should be kept in a tank no less than 30 gallons. The Lantern Basslet is a carnivore, and should be fed a diet of meaty preparations that may include chopped seafood, Mysis shrimps, Brine Shrimp and frozen preparations. It can be fed twice a day for its continued good health. Since it is semi-aggressive, it is better to keep the Lantern Basslet singly unless a bigger aquarium is provided. It might bully smaller, peaceful fish, such as small gobies, and hawkfish, and should not be housed with them. The Lantern Basslet should be provided with lots of hiding places and rubble in which it can hide safely. It likes to swim and perch around sandy bottoms and rockwork, therefore lots of live rocks should be kept in an aquarium. It thrives well in a temperature range of 72-78° Fahrenheit, and pH of 8.1-8.4.
