The Canary Blenny, Meiacanthus ovalaunensis, also known as the Oulan Forktail Blenny, and Canary Fang Blenny has tons of personality and loves to find a favorite spot in the aquarium to call home. It is a full bright yellow color all across its body. They will often use rock crevices, caves, and empty barnacles to hide their body and allow their head to poke out to keep an eye on what’s going on. They love to graze on algae throughout the aquarium. Occasionally the Canary Blenny will experience “pale patches” on their face and body when lights are first turned on – this is normal. The Canary Blenny should not be mixed with other Blennies in small tanks. They will reach a size of 5 inches, and should be kept in tank no less than 30 gallons. They should be kept one per tank, unless a breeding pair is being added, in which case it is recommended to add them at the same time to avoid aggression. Then a tank no less than 50 gallons is required. They have incredible jumping ability and are known to jump from pool to pool, which lends to the other name they are known as: “Rock Skipper”, therefore a tightly secured lid should always be kept on a tank to prevent escapes. They should not be kept with any aggressive tank mates, as they will attack them in self defense by delivering a painful bite. The Canary Blenny is notable for its ability to bite attacking predators, and is considered venomous. Therefore, small children and aquarists alike should exercise caution as the Canary Blenny may perceive fingers as a predator and deliver a painful bite. They eat mostly a herbivorous diet but will readily accept Brine and Mysis shrimp. They will thrive in a temperature range of 72-78°F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
